In Houston tonight

I am in Houston tonight, for the third straight night. Sunday night, we got in two hours after sunset and had to wait until Monday morning to deliver our load.

I picked up a load heading back near my home…supposed to leave today, but didn’t. Sooo, I got to stay two additional nights here.

I sat all day in the yard with my driver waiting to get him loaded. The latest word we have is that he will be loaded by about midday on Wednesday. Then we will head to the OK/CO state line on US 287.

I got in late last night. Today, I worked in the yard. It seems that I am in danger of having a bumper crop of goatheads. For those of you who have never seen these weeds, they are a low leafy plant that produces a nasty sticker that is roughly triangular in shape, thus the name “goatheads”. They are tough and sharp stickers. They really hurt when someone tracks them into the house, leaves them in the carpet, and you step on them.

I sprayed the yard with pre-emergent weed killer, and by sunset, the weeds already were beginning to wilt. I know I probably missed some, so I’m hoping to have a couple of days off so I can spray them again before they bloom out and produce those stickers.

Thursday, I’ve got a medical appointment at the VA in Big Spring, TX. I am having laser surgery on my eyes. It is nothing serious…just a preventive measure to prevent my retina from separating from the eyeball. Without the laser surgery, I could go blind eventually. Then I wouldn’t be able to see how good looking I am?

Late Start-Early Stop

I am helping move some OD loads from the southern edge of NM to the Arizona/New Mexico line. Due to some permit problems, we were an hour and a half late getting started. Then, we spent an unscheduled two hours waiting for some other issues to get clarified. The bottom line was that we had to stop in Socorro, NM, early today because our route took us through some desolate areas of the state where there are no motels. We couldn’t get to any place that had motels before sunset.

Actually I am thankful for the early stop. It gave me a chance to catch up on my sleep. Last night, I got about an hour and a half of sleep. That gets harder as I get older. There was a time when I went 44 hours without sleep during a war exercise in Germany. I can’t do those marathons these days.

Today I also heard that the load that was scheduled to load this week may not load. I did a route survey for this load last week. It is 20′ 6″ high and 15′ 3″ wide. It was supposed to have been loaded in Houston last Friday. Now, there is a question whether it will go this week or not. If it is delayed into next week,then I’ve got a scheduling conflict. I am committed on an other OD load for which I also did a route survey last. Somehow it all will work out.
