Would you believe it took us three whole days to take a mobile home 435 miles to the drop point? That’s what it took us! If you’ve read my previous “Where we are today” posts, you already know that we began this trip on Tuesday. We got about 95 miles before the truck lost its drive shaft. Wednesday, we worked all day to repair the truck until we discovered that it would have to go into a shop for repairs. We moved a whole 16 miles. Today, we took off at the crack of sunrise…drove about 90 miles and had to shut down for 47 mph winds. After about an hour and a half, we took off again…but were delayed en route by two flats (one on the mobile home…BIG BOOM…and one on my truck). We dropped our load late today at the site of a new mine that is being opened up. It is a good thing they sent us a guide. We had a map that allegedly would lead us to the site…but it was MILES away from the actual drop site. We would have been in BIG trouble if we had taken this load up some of those canyons and then have to turn it around and come back out.

I’m still not home. I decided to get a room when I started seeing funny little green men on the shoulder of the road. I’m in Santa Rosa, NM.

Tonight we still are in Roswell, NM. We moved a whole 16 miles today. The driver worked about six hours trying to put a new u-joint on his drive shaft before he figured out that the yoke is so severely bent that he’s going to have to put it in the shop. Fortunately a couple of his buddies were not too far away. One came to tow him to the shop and the other is going to take his load on to the drop point tomorrow.

My brother in law, Gail Chandler, got winded in on US 285 south of Vaughn, NM, after one of the mobile homes he was escorting nearly got tipped over in the wind. Tomorrow is supposed to be windy as well, but we plan to leave at the first moment of sunrise and hopefully will be through the mountains before the wind gets started.
