Thanks for posting this. I'm considering this job. I'm 61 yrs old. My kids are grown and gone. I lost my wife to cancer two years ago. I was a sub mail carrier when she got sick. Trying to find a job now.
Just impossible. A friend of mine owns a trucking company. He has two big jobs now. Both are 800 loads from Fontana to Long Beach and from Fontana to San Diego. First is one hour one way. The second is 2 1/2 hrs one way. I ran the Fontana Long Beach trip this morning at 2:30 am. Not so bad.
If I can make 2000 a month net I'll be ok. I've got my teacher's retirement and my wife's teacher retirement coming in. My short fall is the loans I racked up while she was sick and we both didn't work.
I don't think the interstate is for me. And I wonder if I can be the assertive driver that this job requires. I can not go potty for several hours. Did that when I delivered mail. I am a cautious driver. Not timid but cautious. Can I learn to be assertive or is that instinct. I understand when you say that when the driver needs a lane he needs a lane. There is no being courteous to oncoming drivers. He's got to have the lane to make the transition or exit or what ever. I have no training other than one ride along with a extra long load. Would love to hear your feedback Thanks

Hi Boyd,
Great info. Question how and can you get on with an already established Pilot car company if you have your own vehicals and certifications?
Are there any restrictions to get certifide in all 49 states and Canada? I am type II diabetic.
I live in Texas and am 63 yrs old, retired but would like to drive and travel. I have been in thr trucking industry for 10 yrs as technian to 35 yrs as service manager. I have been a DOT inspector and state inspector. I feel I could do this very well, be an asset to the trucker with the load if any problem that night arise.
Can you or will your reccommend a company I might apply to. Any input you have will be deeply apprciated.
Thank you for your help Robert Benz

OK, I've read through the blog and nothing there makes me less interested. I am in the process of retiring from Information Security work and would like to spend my days driving. I live in Maryland. How do I get started?

Comment on It Takes Money to MAKE Money In This Business! by JLT Pilot Car Services

Couple of Notes:
1. I have found that brokers are the ones who have a 30 day, plus, turn around on the payment. Most of the trucking companies pay with in ten days. Also one must remember that the IRS give a $.50 per mile deduction at the end of the year, for all miles driven in connection with the business, which helps. Therefore, the more you drive, the more you can make!
2. Your article didn't seem to mention what happens if there is a break down. Here is where your flag training comes in handy!
3. Making the public aware of the unusual situation of the presence of an over dimensional vehicle can sometimes a challenge. Some drivers seem to be totally unaware, and some seem to think they have the right of way no matter what! The Pilot car drivers responsibility is to protect the general public under such circumstances, regardless.
4. I did a ride along, with a Pilot car service, several times a couple of years ago, and have been in the business now for a year. I have found that Garmin has units that are compatible with the program 'Map Source'. You can pre-program a DOT route into the unit from a lap top, and eliminate false or missed turns and never get off your route, which is a big plus if your running point.
5. I am looking at expanding my business this year, and I am wondering how to hook up with heavy haul trucking companies on load boards. I am not familiar with acronyms that designate Over-dimensional loads. Can you help? I run all the Eastern and Central time zone states except New York/New Jersey and north, and I do not run in Canada or Mexico.

Thanks,
